Dear Fifth Grade Students,

Welcome to the Sullivan Middle School and the fifth grade! It’s going to be fun, but since you’re in middle school now, there will be some differences.  Next year you will have more than one teacher working with you in math, science, English language arts and social studies. We hope that you like to read because we read a lot at the Sullivan Middle School. 

All students coming to the Sullivan School are expected to read during the summer. Each student is expected to read at least 3 books and complete 3 assignments. On the second page of this packet you will find the assignment for your summer reading. If you complete the summer assignment you will be invited to a celebration of reading in the fall.

Our school is based on Respect and Responsibility.  Think about what those words “looked like” and “sounded like” when you were in your fourth grade classes.  Over the summer, look up these words, respect and responsibility, and share your definitions on your first day  here as a new student at the Sullivan Middle School.
 
 

On the first day of school, we would also like you to bring in some important school supplies. You will need the following items:

       
 1 pkg. #2 pencils  
 2” 3 ring binder with 5 dividers   
 $3.00 for a Sullivan School Agenda Book      filler paper for the binder
      a hand held pencil sharpener  a ruler     colored pencils or crayons (for home use)   a pencil case with binder holes

The Fifth Grade Team
 

Dear 6th Graders,

The sixth grade team welcomes you to a new school year.  We hope it will prove to be an interesting and rewarding experience in productive learning.  You have received from this school copies of the discipline code and rules of acceptable behavior.  Furthermore, in grade six, everyone must work as a team to ensure a positive learning atmosphere.  We look forward to your cooperation in this area, thereby, helping to make this a very successful school year for all.

1. Among continuing expectations are the following:
- Homework (study and written) is assigned daily. The work is expected to be thoughtfully completed at home and returned to class on time.
-Homework notebooks are to be used by you and should be checked weekly by a parent.
- Independent reading is expected at the sixth grade level and should be encouraged at home by a parent.

2. Required School Supplies:
- 2 - 2" ring binders with loose leaf paper
- Sullivan School agenda book ($3.00)
-Pencils with hand-sharpener, coloring supplies, combination lock, ruler, two  pocket folders, and 1 packet of index cards

3. Summer Reading Requirements:
- Students must complete three (3) books of their choice selected from either the 6th Grade District Summer Reading List or books written by a State Framework Author (lists attached).
- Complete the following assignment:
For each of the three books a reading response form (included) must be completed.  The response forms will be collected and graded as your first reading mark for the sixth grade. All sixth graders who complete the summer assignment will be invited to a celebration of reading.

4. Summer Math Requirements:
- Encourage your child to continue their mathematical thinking by using the Lowell Public schools summer math calendars. Found at http://www.lowell.k12.ma.us/for-students and scroll down to Summer Math materials or link through the Sullivan Web page at http://sullivanschool.org.

 Any help you can give to your child in the continuing development of good study habits will be extremely beneficial now and in his/her future.  We as a team, look forward to your support and active participation in your child’s growth and development.

Welcome Seventh Graders,

Your new adventure will begin in grade seven after your fun filled vacation.  We all look forward to welcoming you back to the Sullivan Middle School.  You will have a different teacher for each of your four core subjects.  We will be here to guide and help you with your new schedule.  In grade seven, you will participate in  field trips, interdisciplinary ventures, cooperative learning experiences, and explore new mediums in technology and the arts.
Attached please find a recommended summer reading list and reading response form.  Each student is required to read a minimum of three (3) books.  Students can choose books from the enclosed summer 7th Grade District Summer Reading List or any author listed in the curriculum frameworks (list enclosed). A reading response form should be completed for each book that you read. Those who complete the minimum standard and turn in responses during the first week of school will participate participate in an ice cream sundae celebration. Research indicates that students who read a minimum of six books during the summer are better able to maintain the level of reading skills they achieved during the academic year. With this in mind we encourage and challenge you to double the minimum requirement. You may obtain additional reading response forms at the school or online (http://sullivanschool.org) Remember, reading can take you on adventures you never dreamed possible.

The following list of supplies will help you plan ahead for your back to school shopping.  Supplies recommended for seventh grade include: a backpack or school bag that will fit in your locker, pencils, colored pencils, pens, or magic markers, Sullivan School Agenda Book ($3.00), a calculator for math class, two three-ring binders with dividers and loose-leaf paper for Science and Social Studies, and 4 pocket folders and notebooks for each of your academic classes. In addition, a memory stick/flash drive to transfer documents and files between computers at home and school would be helpful.

Dear Students,

 Welcome to Grade 8.  We are looking forward to an exciting year in which all of you will meet challenges and rise to the level of expectations set by the eighth grade team.  We have high hopes that we will have a great year together.  Our goal is simple.  We want you to be the best that you can be.

 A big part of being your best includes reading.  Reading is a requirement in all subjects, because if you’re a good reader, you’ll be a good learner.  Because reading is so important, we expect 30 minutes per day to be spent on outside reading.

 Summer reading is expected of all Sullivan students.  The eighth grade team requires students to read three (3) books over the summer and complete a reading response form for each one. Choices for books can be from the 8th Grade District Summer Reading List or by a state frameworks author.  Both lists and the reading response forms are included with this report card or are available online at http://sullvianschool.org. All students who meet the requirement of reading 3 or more books will participate in an ice cream social to celebrate the joy of reading.

Please come to school with the following supplies - pencils, black or blue pens, a notebook for each subject (4), colored pencils, and a 3-ring binder with filler paper and dividers for each subject..

Queridos estudiantes de cuarto grado:

Bienvenidos a la Escuela Intermedia Sullivan y al quinto grado. Esto va a ser bien divertido, pero desde que tu estés en la Escuela Intermedia, vas a encontrar unas cuantas diferencias.  En la Escuela Sullivan vas a tener un par de maestros los cuales trabajaran contigo.  Uno de ellos te enseñara Matemáticas y Ciencias y el otro te enseñara English/Language Arts y Estudios Sociales.  Nosotros esperamos que te guste leer, porque aquí en la Escuela Sullivan nos gusta leer mucho.

Nuestra Escuela esta fundamentada en Respecto y Responsabilidad.  Piensa en que “se parecen” estas palabras y a que “te suenan” cuando tu estuviste en tus clases de cuarto grado.  Durante el verano, chequea estas frases, respecto y responsabilidad y comparte tus definiciones en tu primer día aquí como nuevo estudiante de la Escuela Intermedia Sullivan.

Asignación Para Que Hagas En El Verano

Durante las once semanas de verano, el equipo de maestros de quinto grado esperan que tu leas tres (3) libros de la lista de lectura de verano o de la lista de autores del plan de estudios que vas a recibir con tu reporte de notas.  En la Escuela Sullivan tendremos copias extras disponibles.  Al menos necesitas leer tres libros de la lista, escribe los títulos en un papel a parte, y pregúntale a uno de tus padres o encargados que lo firme escoge uno de los libros y escríbele una carta al autor.  Tu carta deberá tener tres (3) párrafos y necesitas preguntarle al autor sobre 1.) los personajes, 2.) el escenario (en que sitio ocurrió la historia), y 3.) algo mas en la historia que te gustaría saber.  Escoge uno de los otros libros que tu leíste y pon al menos tres objetos que se refieran con el libro en una caja de cereal o una bolsa de papel.  Usaras los objetos para contarle a los otros estudiantes sobre tu libro.  Esta actividad es planeada para el Segundo día de escuela.

En el primer día de clases, a nosotros nos gustaría que tu trajeras algunos materiales importantes.  Estos son los artículos que vas a necesitar.

Queridos estudiantes del 6to grado:

Los maestros del 6to grado les damos una cordial bienvenida a este nuevo año escolar.  Esperamos que el mismo sea interesante y a la misma vez lleno de experiencias educativas.  Ustedes han recibido copias del código de conducta y las reglas de comportamiento de la escuela.  Más aún, en el 6to grado se le requiere a todos los estudiantes que trabajen en armonía y cooperativamente para así asegurarnos de crear un ambiente académico positivo para todos.  Por tal razón, esperamos toda su cooperación para así tener un año escolar exitoso.

1. Entre las expectativas continuas se encuentran las siguientes:
   • Tendrán asignaciones/tareas diariamente.  Se espera que pongan todo su esfuerzo en ellas, las completen y las entregen a su maestra a tiempo.
   • Las libretas de asignaciones/tareas deben ser para sus usos personales y sus padres/encargados deben revisarlas semanalmente.
   • Se espera que todos ustedes hagan “lectura independiente” en el salón de clases al igual que en su hogar.
2. Necesitan los siguientes materiales:
   • 1 carpeta (binder) de 3 orgollas ó 1 libreta para cada clase – Inglés, Matemática, Ciencia y Estudios Sociales.
   • Agenda de la escuela Sullivan para anotar las asignaciones/tareas diariamente ($3.00).
   • Bolígrafos, lápices con saca puntas, crayolas o lápices de colores, regla, candado de combinaciones, 5 pocket folders, papel de construcción y “post-it-notes” (necesarias para el trabajo/actividades en el salón de clases).
3. Requisitos de la “Lectura de Verano”:
   • Deben leer por lo menos 3 libros durante el verano.
   • Por cada libro deben de llenar un cuestionario.  Estos mismos seran las primeras notas de lectura para el semestre.  Como recompensa por su arduo trabajo, aquellos estudiantes que lean por lo menos 3 libros serán invitados a un evento especial durante el otoño en el cual compartirán y recomendarán sus libros a otros estudiantes.
4. Requisistos de la “Matemática durante el Verano”:
   • Deben completar por lo menos 2 de las actividades que aparecen en el paquete de matemáticas.
   • Aquellos que completen 2 actividades serán premiados.

A los padres/encargados:

            Se les agradece cualquier ayuda que le puedan brindar a su hijo(a) para que continue desarrollando buenos hábitos de estudio de los cuales se beneficiará ahora y en el futuro.  Esperamos todo su apoyo y cooperación durante el crecimiento académico de su hijo(a).  Gracias.

Después de unas divertidas vacaciones comenzarán una nueva aventura en el 7mo grado.  En el 7mo grado ustedes tendrán un(a) maestro(a) diferente para cada clase.  Sabemos que esta transición puede ser un poco confusa, pero estaremos aquí para ayudarlos.  Como parte del séptimo grado, ustedes participarán en diferentes actividades como: una orientación, excurciones o giras, aventuras interdiciplinarias, experiencias de aprendizaje cooperativamente y explorarán nuevos medios de tecnología y arte.

Adjunto encontrarán una lista de libros recomendados para las lecturas de verano.  Se require que cada estudiante lea por lo menos 3 libros y completen un cuestionario.  Aquellos que lean 3 libros o más, participarán en una celebración de “ice cream sundae” al principio del año escolar.  Los estudios dicen que los estudiantes que por lo menos leen 6 libros durante el verano pueden mantener su nivel de lectura durante el año escolar.  Con esto en mente los exhortamos a que tomen el reto de leer el doble de lo requerido, 6 libros.  Aquellos estudiantes que lean 6 libros o más también recibirán un “Pizza Party”.  Si necesitan más formularios de preguntas (cuestionarios) pueden obtenerlos en la siguiente página del Internet: http://sullivanschool.org/Library2/Summer%20reading.html.  !Recuerden que la lectura los puede llevar a lugares nunca antes conocidos!

Este año nosotros pasamos mucho tiempo tratando buscar cual sería el “libro perfecto”.  Al igual que nosotros, recuerden utilizar diferentes estrategias para elegir un buen libro para la lectura de verano.  También tengan en consideración:

                        el género                                      el autor

                        el resumen                                                el título

                        la portada                                                la serie

                        las ilustraciones                             las recomendaciones
